Have you checked that the Master and PCM mixer elements are not muted and zeroed?

Audio is dead after installing numerous updates/(patches) have been installed

naturally checked all volume settings, still no audio??

How would one go about checking whether the "master and "pcm" elements are muted. What is the Master? What is the PCM. and why would you use such an acronym? Thank you in advance.
