Bug Description

After upgrading to Jaunty I get this every time I log in:

Network service discovery disabled
Your current network has a .local domain ...

I think this is why my shared printers doesn't show up on other systems any longer.

The only thing is, I'm not on a .local-domain. The network I'm is xyz.lan.

$ sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
 * Starting Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon * avahi-daemon disabled because there is a unicast .local domain

Btw, when I run avahi-daemon start, I see nothing going out on my network interface. No DNS lookups are done.

It seems a file is created at some point in /var/run/avahi-daemon. If that exists, avahi doesn't start.

Workaround for me: sudo rm /var/run/avahi-daemon/disabled-for-unicast-local

I can confirm this, but I don't have an idea what should be changed for a proper fix.

I can confirm this too. I am running Jaunty on a MacBook Pro 1,1.

I have this issue too. It's annoying and I'd like to go away. The workaround Thomasnovin wrote does not work for me.

I changed AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL to 0 in /etc/default/avahi-daemon. /var/run/avahi-daemon directory was not created at all. So I assume the Avahi daemon is not running. Anyway, it stopped the annoying notification for me.

What to do? (By the way, my local network is not working)

Same here. Is this bug will be fixed in Ubuntu 10.10?

I get the same error in 10.10, but mine may be due to a previous version of my /etc/hosts file with a 127.0.0.1 assignment to the .local domain. That entry has long ago been deleted, but there may be some residual confusion in the configuration of network manager.
