Menu options invisible, only dashes visible

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Since I have Ubuntu 8.10 my openoffice programmes are unusable because no menuoptions are readable (see attachment). I tried
$sudo aptitude remove --purge openoffice.org-core
Reinstalled writer (oo 2.4) wich didn't help.
Upgraded to 00 3.0 wich also didn't help.

I might have the same problem with Steam (Windows gamingplatform run with Wine (and wine-doors)) but in Steam the menu options are crossed off as if someone used a pencil to make it unreadable.
