GDM freeze with laptop on battery but not with DC adapter

PC: laptop Sony vaio VGN-CR42S (graphic adapter ATI X2300)
Ubuntu version: intrepid

Bug description: when i start PC on battery ubuntu freeze (black screen) at GDM start.When connected with DC adapter pc work ( gdm display user login screen).

This appear when 3D was activated (either with FGLRX proprietary driver for ATI or with ATI Catalyst driver (Version 8.11 and 9.1)

the issue is driver specific so rather an xorg one

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
