Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I'm using firefox-3.0 (output from apt-cache policy: Installed: 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1) on Ubuntu 8.10 and almost no flash videos work for me the way they're supposed to. Videos that aren't on YouTube don't work, and videos that _are_ on YouTube make Firefox freeze up for a few minutes and then crash. Some videos have worked on YouTube but it's only around 30%, and I never watch videos on YouTube anymore because having my Firefox crash is just too much trouble for a 30% chance of a video.

I've always had a problem with flash on my computer, ever since Hardy- and I find it hard to recommend that people should use Ubuntu if they can't watch flash. I really love Ubuntu, and that's why I hate myself when I realize that I've stopped doing things on Ubuntu that I used to do on Windows just because it doesn't work in Ubuntu.

Flash is an important factor in computers nowadays and this must work for every computer!

Thank you for this bug report. Firefox-3.0 cannot by itself view flash videos. You need to install a flash player. Flash Player 10 is available to use for viewing flash videos and works quite well. To install it go System->Administration->Software Sources->Third-Party Software and the enable the partner repository. After this is done install the package adobe-flashplugin. You will then have to restart Firefox.

Now, if you have already installed a flash player, what package did you install to view flash? Do you know what version it is? Thanks.

I'm new to all of this but maybe my input can help. I have Ubuntu 8.04 and firefox 3.0 fully updated as of today. I am having the same issue, flash does not work on sites such as you tube and sites with flash intros, however most flash advertisements do work. I have tried using the proprietary flash 10 from both Adobe's website and the Ubuntu add/remove program list. I have also tried using the Macromedia Flash plugin, Flash player 9, in Ubuntu's add/remove list. I only used one plugin at a time and restarted the computer after each plugin change. I hope this helps.

I feel really dumb for not trying this earlier, but in my case I was able to resolve the issue by disabling a Firefox addon called Flashblock.
