User switcher applet sticks out

Bug Description
Background color, applet height, button shadow and maybe even the font differs from the standard clock and notification area applet. Clicking user name to bring down log out and exit menu differs even more. Applet uses another control than the clock.

Ubuntu is using a new user switcher that isn't included in the nimbus code from Sun. I have been away for a while and I'm just getting back. It will take me a while to get back up to speed. If you have any suggestions, or wish to contribute, please let me know and I'll be happy to add you to this group.
I'm still very new at this and going through the learning curve, so any additional help is always much appreciated.
