Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

After the Feb 7 updates, compiz no draws the screen in Jaunty alpha 4 - only the background. Instead, compiz takes up around 35% and xserver takes up around 65% of CPU time. The mouse cursor changes to the spinning 'wait' icon if I move it over the area taken up by the Appearances window, so gnome otherwise appears to be working, but compiz has to be killed manually from a ctrl-alt-1 console.

This happens anytime you run compiz, whether from the command line (eg compiz.real --replace) or the Appearances window, or at login. (At login it appears as if the computer has hung, because only the screen background gets drawn).

Version info:
ubuntu 9.04
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu3
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu12
compiz 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu9

And here's an strace of the more complete command that compiz runs, ie "/usr/bin/compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --replace --loose-binding --replace core ccp".

compiz doesn't log anything to .xsession-errors.

The nvidia card is "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)".

Seeing similar thing in KDE.
For both compiz and kwin, enabled compositing just leave a screen with nothing, but a wall paper of KDM.
I am using nvidia 6600GT and 180.22 driver.
