Bug Description

I'm using Kubuntu Jaunty kernel 2.6.28-6 64 bit with a Nvidia 7600GS card and the 180.27 display driver. I can log-in either via normal boot or recovery mode, but as soon as the default (grey, not blue) background is shown, the computer just hangs.
I've been able to retrieve the .xsessions-errors file (which is attached). Things start to go wrong with "X Error: XSyncBadAlarm 167". I'm running several versions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu and am not sure how to run ubuntu-bug -p xorg as I don't know how to get to a command prompt for this particular OS. This has occurred after a sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and reboot (only today's updates).

Kwin seems to cause part of the problem with NO compiz effects.
I logged in as before to the grey screen and then pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 and entered the command
$ax | grep compiz.real
Compiz was not running at all (I've yet to install it in Kubuntu).
 I then tried
$top
and it seems that xorg and kwin was using 100% of my processors (hence nothing worked).
Rebooted into recovery mode and even though xorg.conf was fine I ran xfix.
Kubuntu working again.

I spoke too soon. There was an right offset on the screen, suggesting that the restricted display driver (180.27) was not being used. I re-installed the driver via System-Hardware Drivers. When installing it was suggested by the Hardware Driver that the Nvidia driver that I was using was a different version. As soon as I re-install this the problem starts all over again.
It seems there is a conflict between the latest updates and the Nvidia 180.27 driver.
I'll have to put up with the display offset (no Nvidia restricted driver) until this is fixed.
