I have the exact same situation on my Dell XPS-M1330. So I am confirming this bug.
Used to work fine in 8.10, with today's Daily Build 9.04 my scenario is exactly like Ivan discribed it.

I've figured out the issue a few hours ago and solved the problem in my case :) I've been affected by bug #251252 (kernel panic while unloading iwl3945 module), and have modified /etc/pm/sleep.d/ according to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/251252/comments/43

After reverting the changes, everything works normally. So, actually this bug is my own fault, but I don't think that this behaviour as absolutely normal.

Ivan,
Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds.

Thanks in advance.
