Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

1) Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
2) vlc:
  Installed: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.9.4-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
*** 0.9.4-1ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/multiverse Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) I expected to open an avi file or mp4 or mpg file and have it play in vlc
4) Instead the video would not play and i would open 2 windows of the same video and it would play on the second window.

* this is not just a VLC issue, however, Kaffeine, Totem, KMplayer are also affected---chances are this is assigned to wrong package (gstreamer perhaps?).

Specifically, open vlc-tools-preferences-video-output
* options 'default' 'xvideo extension video' 'general graphics interface video output' all produce the same bug.
* options 'colour ascii' 'X11 video output' both work fine
* options 'OpenGL Video output' crash vlc and render vlc unable to open without deleting the vlc config directory

* gcc version 4.3.2 ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu10
* Qt4

Also; it doesn't matter *which* two media players are open, a kaffeine window and a vlc window will suffice, as will two vlc windows -- only the second will play video.

* Also, the sound WOULD play (which makes it seem like #134370 could be related), even when video wouldn't, but just a black screen would result for video.
* Video card in question ATI ES1000
