nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT: KDE does not always logout/shutdown/reboot successfully

Bug Description

Using Kubuntu Jaunty x64, about half of the time you tell the computer to logout, shutdown, or reboot, KDE gets stuck on a black or white screen, as if it has logged out but not passed control back to KDM. There is no error message displayed, it just gets stuck. The only way to get around this bug is to drop to a text console, login, and execute the reboot or halt command manually.

Same here... Using 9.04 alpha5. For me never reboots, or shutdown from KDE4.2. Which i am pretty sure is not a problem from KDE4.2, since in 8.10 works perfectly.

Something similar here. Yesterday I have upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty (dist-upgrade) and now when I use the logout button, there is no action. More than that, kwin stops responding to mouse events - I can switch between applications/dekstops using keyboard, and mouse works in application windows. But when I click on the root window or panel, nothing happens. Then after about a minute kwin starts responding again (but still no logout).

I have found a thread discussing Nvidia driver problems,

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/335879

After upgrading to 180.37 driver (using URLs provided in the thread mentioned above) I don't see the problem anymore - logout/shutdown works perfectly. It seems that Nvidia driver 180.35 had broken signal processing.

This bug is not a duplicate. I discovered it long before the Nvidia 180.35 drivers were released, and it still occurs now, even with 180.37.

Hi Michael,

did you try to look at the contents of ~/.xsession-errors from text console? It often helps a lot as it might contain error messages. And it makes sense to look at dmesg output, to see whether audit prevents some operations.

Here is my .xsession-errors from a failed shutdown. The dmesg did not contain anything out of the ordinary.

Please try to upgrade to 180.37 version of the drivers. According to 3v1, the packages still require you to remove /usr/lib/libGL.so first.
Report here if the problem is fixed or not.

I have been using the 180.37 drivers since very shortly after their release. I even packaged them in my PPA. Now, I am using the 185.13 beta drivers released yesterday. The problem still occurs with both, because it is not related to the Nvidia drivers.

Thanks for your reply. Have you tested also the official package nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (180.37-0ubuntu1) released today (removing before the file mentioned above)?

Michael Marley (mamarley) wrote :

Yes, I have tested that version. However, I do not believe this bug is related to the nvidia graphics drivers. I was just able to re-create it on another system without an nvidia graphics card.

[This is an automated message]

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

For details on the changes in this version of -nvidia, please see:

Bug still happening. This would be because it is a KDE bug, not an Nvidia bug.

Since installing 9.04 on my Dell Optiplex 360, it did not complete shutdowns or restarts from the Kde session logout.

Recently I updated the xorg.conf with the lines

         Driver "intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"

for my onboard intel video. It has fixed issues of sluggishness, but now it fails to complete session logout. It now goes to a black screen and does not respond to keyboard or mouse, requiring a power off reboot.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

I have actually been using this driver for quite a while (it is in my own PPA). However, as the bug is not caused by the Nvidia drivers, it is unaffected. It seems, though, that the bug is fixed in KDE 4.3.x. Can anyone confirm?

I have probably the same problem

with nvidia 180.44
using KDE 4.3.00
on Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04)
on linux-2.6.28-15-generic.

When I choose logout, shutdown or reboot from the K menu, nothing really happens, only one icon disappears from the system tray (hp-systray) and plasma does not react to mouseovers anymore (starters on the desktop are not highlighted onMouseOver); but clicking one of the starters starts the application as usual.

I can shutdown using Konsole with "sudo shutdown -P now" and reboot with "sudo reboot".
To just log out, I need to zap X (ctrl alt backspace) or go to another tty and "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart".

Please tell me if you need more information from me!

Alright, sounds like this isn't an -nvidia issue after all, but something in kde. i'm not familiar with kde packages so not sure what to refile this against, I'll just remove the package for now. if anyone else knows what it should be filed against please update.
