Bug Description

Hi there,
I'm running ubuntu on my PC which has an AMD/ATI Radeon HD4650 as the video card but I cannot change the resolution of my screen with the standard driver.
When the system boots for the first time, it automatically sets the resolution to 1280x1024 but I'm used to 1024x768, then when I set this config the display colors became wrong, like 8 colors or less.
The only way I can get the system to work on 16/24bit color depth again is changing the resolution back to 1280x1024 and restarting the X server.
Also I have tried the `fglrx` driver which seems to work fine.
I'm running out of time so I didn't touched the xorg.conf file to check if there's a way to get the 1024x768 resolution on the default driver, maybe with another vertical/horizontal refresh rates it should work.

Thanks.
(I hope you can understand my bad english)

Hi caiot5,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

and maybe this should help too.
(as you can see, I cannot set the refresh rate, it's locked to 0Hz)

Hmm, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be retested on latest Jaunty to make sure the issue still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/. If you can reproduce it in the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from this testing.

Ok, btw I need a few days to download this file and to test due to my slow internet connection (128k).

This bug doesn't happen anymore in Jaunty, but it doesn't detect correctly my monitor and (sometimes) I cannot change my refresh rate, it's locked to 60Hz.
I'm saying 'Sometimes' because if I reboot the system a couple of times, it will remain "Unknown" but then it'll let me set the refresh rate up to 85Hz.
I'm including the new Xorg.0.log just because it may be helpful to trace another bug.

Oops, I think I found another bug.
When I set the resolution of 640x480 and then set back the 1024x768, the gnome menus won't come back to their place.
The only way I could find to get the menus back to their right position is setting the higher resolution available (1360x768 here) and then setting back to 1024x768.
I'm attaching a screenshot to show you a sample.
Should I report it as another bug?

The refresh problem doesn't happen anymore on alpha 5.
I think this bug report is done now.
