Bug Description

I have a laptop with an external monitor attached to it
with the 180.27 nvidia driver, the nvidia-settings program is unable to extend my desktop to the second screen. It seems to detect the screen just fine, but obviously fails to set the meta mode.

Here the corresponding error:

"Failed to set MetaMode (1) 'CRT-0: nvidia-auto-select @1920x1200 +1680+0, DFP-0: 1680x1050 @1680x1050 +0+0' (Mode 3600x1200, id: 65) on X screen 0
Would you like to remove this MetaMode?"

I get this for any combination of screen resolutions. With the old 173.XX drivers under hardy everything works just fine.
My laptop is a lenovo T61 with a nvidia quadro nvs140 card.

What version of ubuntu are you using and how did you install the 180.xx drivers?
Was it from the updates repo or using the nvidia install?

I have the same issue in 9.04 on mythbuntu.

I think this could be related to lunchpad bug 325115. It sounds like they just hit the problem coming at it from a different direction. This bug has a workaround and is supposedly fixed upstream, just waiting on the fixes to come down.

There is also a Debian bug (514576) that sounds very similar.

I have this issue in Ubuntu Jaunty with the 180.29 driver installed from the normal packages in the repository (180.27 was not working either)

agreed this is the same issue as described in launchpad bug 325115. And the workaround described there is working for me.
