Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

With the latest intel/xorg Jaunty kit, I'm getting a lot of hard locks on GM965. I have 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu1 driver and xorg core 2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu1 with kernel 2.6.28-6.17 on amd64. The machine (a ThinkPad X61 Tablet with a VGA monitor attached to the UltraBase) just freezes when I'm using no particular program, for example Firefox or Nedit or whatever. Afterwards the mouse cursor moves but mouse clicks do nothing and the keyboard does not respond.

There is no output in dmesg or xorg.log

I also have a X61 Tablet, and I don't have these problems. The two differences I can spot is that I use 32-bit (i386) and that I don't have a VGA connected (I have it in the Ultrabase every now and then, though). Have you checked if this problem still occurs if you don't have an external monitor attached?

Yes I have also seen it without the external monitor. I get it about twice a day, roughly. I wonder if it is because I have UXA enabled?

Saw this again and was able to shell into the laptop and investigate. The machine is not locked up. I can strace X and see that it still reads keyboard and mouse events. However killing off the clients doesn't change the display. Killing off X hangs the machine, requiring a sysrq reboot. This is with latest Jaunty amd64.

I can confirm this one. I have HP Compaq 6710b with integrated Intel GM965/GL960, a part of lspci's output follows:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a02] (rev 0c)
 Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:30c0]

 Region 4: I/O ports at 4000 [size=8]

 Kernel modules: intelfb

The system hangs spontaneously and unpredictably, usually when I do something which causes the screen to update. Mouse cursor moves but the system doesn't respond to neither mouse nor keyboard. All special buttons (eg. Power) also don't work.

The OS itself, however, keeps functioning: programs work and I can ssh into it and even reboot it with a command.

We have a PPA with some new tools for debugging X freezes:

I know how irritating X freezes can be. They're also typically
quite hard to debug, but the information provided by these new
tools should help upstream figure them out.

You can help by doing the following:

 A. Install the PPA packages on Jaunty and boot kernel 2.6.30-rc2
 B. Reproduce your freeze
 C. ssh into the machine and run the steps to collect the info
 D. Attach the tarball of the results to this bug report

With this information, we'll be able to forward your bug upstream.

8.10 worked fine

Since there's been no response from the original reporter, I'm closing this as expired.

I notice that you are using version 2.6.1 of the driver, whereas we are shipping 2.6.3, which has a number of fixes especially for UXA. Please re-test against the Jaunty release and open a new bug report if this is still an issue.
