The empathy / telepathy status 'connected' icon (a green circle) is not unique. See attached suggestion mockup.

For me this is "invalid" since empathy is using the standard protocol icons, which are app-independent

Then perhaps the standard protocol icons idea needs re-thinking. If
the aim is to have common status icons how am I supposed to know which
status icon is for which application if I'm running aMSN, Empathy and
Ekiga all at once for example?

they should not present a tray icon, but depend on the indicator
applet, and the fast user switch applet
