Bug Description

OpenOffice can't open an XML files generated by Microsoft Excel.

The XML structure is described in the following document.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnexcl2k2/html/odc_xlsmlinss.asp

When OpenOffice tries to load an XML file it freezes and becomes unresponsive.

It also can't import to MS Office XML format—the same situation, it just freezes. I tried to manually run XSLT processor using /usr/lib/openoffice/share/xslt/export/wordml/ooo2wordml.xsl but I've got empty output (I tried with xsltproc and xalan).

Can you still reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid)? I believe this issue has been corrected sometime since the initial bug filing.

Chris, I tried to export document to MS Office 2003 XML format using OpenOffice 3.0.1 on Ubuntu 8.10 (installed from http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu), but it fails with following error:

Error saving the document <xxx>: write error. The file could not be written.

Ok. That is a problem I have seen with some other filters. I will try to get that issue resolved asap, I currently am not certain what is causing the issue.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

This was caused by what appears to be a combination of issues, the xsl files were written to xslt 1.0 spec and saxon v9 is xslt 2.0 parser. It seems the system saxon v9 did not work properly but switching back to OOo internal saxon v9 fixed the problem. We are looking at potentially upgrading the system saxon v9 to a newer version if this corrects the problem so that we can go back to using the system version. But for the time being we are using the OOo internal one for Jaunty Beta since that works.

Thanks,

Chris

I think this bug has reappeared in Karmic 9.10.
I get slightly different symptoms:

When trying to open an Excel XML 2003 file I get "General Error. General Input/Output Error"

When trying to save a new blank spreadsheet using Excel 2003 XML format I get "Error saving the document Untitled1. Write Error. The file could not be written."

I confirm that this bug is back in Karmic 9.10.

I found that gnumeric is able to open such files.
