KDE 4.2 - Gnome keyring / auto login

Bug Description

I am a user of KDE 4.2 and am very happy with Gnome do. However, the following two items are bothering me:

- When starting up Do it asks me for a Gnome keyring password, even so, I haven't used/created one.
(can this be aware of working without a password, or DE check: KDE?)

- The 'start Gnome Do at login' feature doesn't work under KDE 4.2

Thanks for your feedback.

Have you enabled any Google plug-ins which require you to enter a username and password? I find that this is what prompts me for a gnome-keyring unlock when I use auto-login. As a result, I have disabled those plug-ins. Perhaps a future version of Docky will work around this issue, like Network Manager did, but I suspect that the real problem here lies with Seahorse and its annoying insistence to make you enter your password to unlock the "login" keyring whenever you use auto-login.

Hi Neil, thanks for your reply. I will try to answer your questions:
- I have not installed any plug-in from Google, of this I'm 100% certain.
- About the auto-login you're right, I am using this, but then again, this is on KDE and not on Gnome.

Very annoying beast this Seahorse ;)

Is there any way to automate entering the password? Perhaps some task to run at startup to access the keyring?

Why do you even HAVE a password then?! The point of a password is security, if you have everything automatically entering in that password you remove that security. Might as well give up, run as root with no password, and wait 30 seconds for your machine to be taken over.

That's fair enough, I'm new to the whole autologin thing (I've always booted to GDM in the past, but I'm experimenting with autologin for the 9.10 beta). But I'm not sure what the difference (security-wise) is between letting all applications EXCEPT Do run when I automatically log in, and letting all applications INCLUDING Do run. What is the difference?

@Rover Dyer I will tell you why I want the password on but want it to automatically login.

For the first it is my laptop so I want it to boot in and be able to use it. I do not really need a login password since everyone with physical access and knowledge will be able to reset the password and login.
However I want the keyring to have a password. Right now even if you change your password the keyring password does not change. You can try that yourself. The keyring needs
a password because without a password it will show all passwords in the keyring... Yea if you unlock it you will be able to view all your passwords. This might be a good and bad. An exercise to the user why it can be good and bad.

Therefore I wish there was a much better security on the keyring where you have to enter the keyring password everytime you are going to view the password but application do have the ability to auto login. Or cryptify the passwords stored in the keyring when it is unlocked so someone does not just take a peak...
