Bug Description

Build Version:9.04 20020203 Date:20090203
Kernal 2.6.28-6-generic

Environment used for testing:
UNR daily build 20090203 i386

Summary: When Ubuntu UNR comes up after being loaded the busy icon stays on.

The busy icon stayed active as I opened and closed applications

top command shows these processes running
dbus-daemon
nautilus
Xorg
x-session-manag

The nautilus , dbus-daemon and Xorg process keep swapping cpu usage in a range of 11-6%

I went into a terminal and typed ps -ef. The launcher process was very active. When I quit the terminal the pointer cursor finally appeared.

This appears to be a startup notification issue: specifically something in the session claims to support startup notification, but isn't reporting successful startup. Starting *any* application at this point should make the icon go away. A proper solution involves investigation of each application started in the session, to determine if it claims to support startup notification and whether it actually does.

This issue is caused by Nautilus afacit.

I've disabled every autostart program and the issue still occurred. Then, removing nautilus from gconf (for gnome-session) stopped this issue from occuring.

I believe it is because nautilus exits after starting up as it doesn't need to draw the desktop so quits without completing it's startup notification.

With the latest gconf-defaults, which remove nautilus from the default UNR session, this problem does not occur. It would still be nice to patch nautilus to always call startup_complete, though.

This is also afflicting me with today's daily build (of the USB installer image).

Should this have been fixed in the latest version?

What exact steps should I take to resolve this issue, i.e. to remove nautilus from the default UNR session?

That's quite old; report with newer active version if needed
