I have the same issue.
I'm using an Acer Aspire One.
I have Jaunty alpha 4 on a flash disk running in live mode.
The Enable Wireless text and checkbox in the network manager icon are greyed / grayed out.
If I remove my RJ45 ethernet connection I have no connectivity.
If I plug in a Dlink DWL-G122, it is recognised but still the checkbox remains greyed out.

According to the DebuggingNetworkManager page:
If a network-manager bug report is about not being able to connect the title or summary should be in the format:

"[CHIPSET] cannot connect to (ENCRYPT_METHOD)"

where the CHIPSET is the wireless driver used and ENCRYPT_METHOD is the encryption method used by your wireless network.

Please read the bug report again. NetworkManager have no problem connecting to a wireless network - the problem lies in that nm-applet doesn't seems to recognize that there is in fact a wireless network interface. Also requesting the encryption method is bogus since the problem doesn't lies in connecting to a specific wireless network (so it's meaningless to talk about the encryption method...).

But since you are requesting that i follow the instructions in DebuggingNetworkManager i will follow what is actually meaningful:

poizan@poins:~$ tail -n0 -f /var/log/syslog > /tmp/syslog &
[1] 4238
poizan@poins:~$ sudo killall NetworkManager
poizan@poins:~$ sudo modprobe -r ath5k
poizan@poins:~$ sudo modprobe ath5k
poizan@poins:~$ sudo NetworkManager
poizan@poins:~$ fg
tail -n0 -f /var/log/syslog > /tmp/syslog
^C

/tmp/syslog is attached

Thanks for your response.

The reason I asked is because it wasn't clear from your initial report if you could connect to a wireless network at all. I wanted to be sure the problem was with the network applet and not because Network Manager was providing poor information to the applet.

I'm having the same problem on Acer aspire one with ath5k. NetworkManager can't manage wireless networks. If i set up wicd (another wirless manager) its working without any problem.
