I did a clean install: headphones are working, while mic still not.
Attaching when I reboot on linux!

I also had this problem with my new Dell E6400. But for me it turned out that this is not a bug. This post solved my problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6308232&postcount=6

"So here's how you can fix it..

Double click on the sound icon and open your volume control. Select the device HDA Intel (Alsa) [High Definition Audio Device]. Click "Preferences" and have the following items selected:
* Digital Mic 1
* Digital Input Source

After clicking close, goto the Options tab. Select "Digital Mic 1" for your Digital Input Source. In the Recording tab make sure your Digital Mic 1 is turned up, all the way for testing.

Then make sure your sound settings are using ALSA, System > Preferences > Sound. I have everything selected to "ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture".

Now test her out. Open "Sound Recorder" and hit the record button. Say the following sentence twice: "Linux is great. Linux is greater than Windows. If the box says Windows 95 or greater, then Linux is the greater. Macs are PCs." Hit "Stop" and then hit "Play". I recommend making sure your playback volume is up as well that way you can hear your voice. At first my volume was muted when I hit play but I realized it was when I noticed I couldn't hear Pandora playing."

I don't have your options. In the preferences dialog there's no
"Digital Mic1" neither "Digital Input Source"
I have DAC0, DAC1, Import0 Mux, Import1 Mux, Mux, Mux 1, Analog
Loopback, Analog Loopback 1, Input Source, Input Source.

That's strange. Did you change any options? I've tested this with a new installation of Ubuntu 8.10 and it works.

Ok, that's why I cannot find those options. I'm running jaunty, non intrepid

I can confirm this on Jaunty too (fully updated), using the same driver on a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ31M, I have no mic input listed, not even in alsamixer.

In fedora works now. I've found on one page a patch that was included in 26.29-rc7

The patch does not cleanly apply, because it needs tabs
I'm attaching a new patch

I also had this bug on Kubuntu Jaunty, while Intrepid worked well. (I had also reported it as bug 339957.)
As of today's updates my system (Dell E6400) now works perfectly in Jaunty, as well (could it be the update from 2.6.28-10 to 2.6.28-11?).
