Bug Description

Binary package hint: amsn

aMSN icon in jaunty seems to mix itself with other icons in the notification area. It also doesn't update itself as it should when I change status. Instead it loads a new icon in front of the old one. Right now I also have a black background behind the icon..
I attach a picture showing the icon.

amsn version: 0.97.2~debian-1ubuntu3
Ubuntu version: i386 Jaunty Alpha

Thanks for your report. The icon seems to be fine for me. What graphics driver are you using? Does the corruption occur every session?

I'm using the radeon driver (1:6.10.0-1ubuntu1) and yes, every session, but tt isn't always the same problem. Right now I don't have the black background, but the icon still have "multiple layers" with different status icons. I always have liferea running in the notification area and it starts about the same time as amsn at login (both in autostart) and sometimes I get a mix of those two icons representing amsn.

It seems that it has something to do with compiz and visual effects. I have a second computer that also runs ubuntu jaunty and amsn. The main difference is that the second computer has fglrx instead of radeon and doesn't have visual effects activated. I saw that the icon seems fine on that computer so I tested turning of visual effects on my primary and then restart amsn. The icon then worked. Turning on visual effects AFTER amsn has started had no effect. The icon still worked. When I later restart amsn (with compiz on) makes the icon behave strange again.

Primary (radeon):
Turn off effects and then start amsn -> Icon fine
Start amsn and after that start the effects -> Icon fine
Start amsn with the effects already activated -> Icon not fine

Secondary (fglrx):
Icon always working since the effects cannot be activated. Driver not yet compatible I guess.

Problem solved. After installing the compiz updates released a couple of days ago it now works fine.

Hi there, I've got the same problem of Niclas, but in my case the problem still persists, even after the Compiz update, I'm using Jaunty BETA on Asus EEEPC 901, see the attched image for details. Many thanks.

Thanks for your comment. Is the problem reproducible every time? Does it occur when using Metacity instead of Compiz? Does it occur when using the default Human theme? What graphics driver are you using? Thanks in advance.

The problem occurs when I enable the desktop effects (Compiz or Metacity), if I disable them the problem disappear and the tray icon is shown correctly. The problem does non depend on the theme used.

My graphic card is an Intel 965gse integrated in my EEEPC 901 running Ubuntu 9.04 beta.

Does the problem only occur with that particular amsn icon, or with others as well? What does that icon represent, do you have some steps on how to produce it? The icons used when opening amsn and being online are different for me, and the problem does not occur with them. Please ensure that you are running up-to-date Jaunty, which includes amsn 0.97.2~debian-2ubuntu2. Thanks again!

The problem occurs with all amsn icons (logging in, online, offline, etc.). I have amsn 0.97.2~debian-2ubuntu2 (up to date).

I too noticed that the problem appears using compiz. I see like if the icon doesn't redraw background, so I see the foreground, but in the background I see "previous" icons, like if it doesn't been cleared...

The problem doesn't depend on the theme, icon or status. My aMSN is up to date (as the rest of the system, includin Compiz core).
It also doesn't depend on the step, the problem concerns the concflict between Compiz (or Metacity) and aMSN, the rest of the tray icons (Screenlets, bluetooth, Volume) are ok.

I'll attach again an image of what the icon looks like.

Marking as a Compiz issue since it appears to work fine with standard Metacity. Confirming due to multiple users experiencing this.

It would be good if someone could test this with Metacity composite too. I'm still not sure why I have different amsn icons to those in the attached images.
