Bug Description

In Jaunty a3, notifications are positioned over the Gnome panel, hiding important part of it.

Steps to reproduce:
1) System > Preferences > Pop-up notifications
2) Preview

You will notice, that the notification is positioned over the Desktop switcher and Trash icon, effectively hiding them. Now try to change the position to upper right: the popup now hides volume, network, date/time and user switcher applets. In any case user is required to close the popup before he can access the hidden part of the panel.

Proposed solution:
Offset the popup's vertical position by the height of the gnome-panel, placing the popup notification in the desktop area.

My Ubuntu version:
Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release: 9.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in notify-osd.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for updating this bug with vital information. Usually I have no problem determining the right package in a bug report, this is somewhat specific case - this is really not a "classical" application, where you can find the "Report a Problem", or even a "About this application" option...

Tried System > Preferences > Pop-up notifications, error: "notification-properties: no such file blah blah".

Tried to run notification-properties in terminal, it hinted to install notification-daemon. After installing, the problem cannot be reproduced, these are whole different notifications obviously :-)

I guess this bug can be closed.

I have same problem.
I noticed this problem with notification-daemon and notify-osd (Screenshot-notify-osd_bad.png and Screenshot-notification_daemon.png). But if I removed and reloaded notify-osd daemon the notifications will assume correct position (Screenshot-notify-osd_good.png).
With notification-daemon it is ever in bad position.

I attach the screen-shots
