Bug Description

I'm installing jaunty in a secondary disk (sdb) on my production machine. The first disk is configured with Ubuntu 8.10 (root: sda5 boot: sda2) and Windows XP (sda1). I'm booting with Grub 0.97. I want to install jaunty in 2 partitions on sdb (root: sdb5, boot sdb1) and chain the Grub: MBR + sda2 + sdb1 + sdb5. If the procedure doesn't work, I'll boot from a floppy. I have to investigate.

I already installed Jaunty and booted succesfully but the installation hid the first disk. I could not boot my production Ubuntu. It required the typical grub manipulation to straiten things out. [grub: root(hd1,0); setup(hd0); exit] Doing so, I cannot boot Jaunty. -- I discovered the [Advanced...] button in Panel 8 on the third installation.

The install procedure requires some polishing.

In Step 3 of 8 [Where are you?], the image of the globe is too dark on my cathode-ray screen. The oceans and the continents are undifferenciated. Change the Gamma of the Image to make it lighter.

From Step 3 [Where are you?], when you move to the previous screen, it displays "Step 3" instead of Step 2 [Welcome].

In Step 5 of 8 [Prepare disk space], I choose Manual and click Forward. The system is scanning disks, The Step number on the next panel should increment, since I changed the panel. The title is [Prepare partitions].

I complete the manual partitioning and click Forward to Step 6. Then come back to Step 5, the partitioning information is lost. The states must be recorded and displayed through all panels. For example, you enter data up to Step 6 and decide to change the default keyboard layout on Step 4 (I live in 4 languages...). After the change you would come back to Step 6 accepting the displayed information.

In Step 6 [Who are you?], make the password fields a little bit bigger. I type more than 8 characters usually.

In Step 7 [Migrate documents and settings], the lists displays an account to be imported located in a partition that will be erased. I installed Jaunty already but it is not in a bootable state. So, my old account is still present in the root partition (sdb5). I chose to reformat this partition. The account virtually doesn't exist. Or does it? If the migration is not possible, the list should not display the partitions to be formated.

The list in Step 7 shows the accounts in the Windows XP partition and Ubuntu 8.10.

In Step 8 [Ready to install], something should be more explicit than a tiny [Advanced...] I don't know how to implement this function (layout) but in the first run I didn't see the button. I probably found what I was looking for: a way to install the boot loader in sdb1, leaving intact the Production OS.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your ideas may have been included with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version.
