Bug Description

With Ubuntu 6.10 DapperFlight4 (Install + LiveCD Version) X11 doesn´t work.
The System crashes with a black screen.

I own a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook with an ATI Radeon X300 Mobility graphic card.

With install version I even tested different kinds of drivers (ati, radeon, vesa) by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf within a LiveCD environment - but no one woked...

Here are dmesg und lspci -v from my Ubuntu 5.10 installation (which runs perfectly) with ATI´s fglrx driver.

Within Flight 3, 4, and 5.
I can't resolve this problem with dpkg-reconfigure.
For me, if I cannot install my Ubuntu, is a very big problem.
Video card suppor is very very important.

Just tried Dapper flight 5 and x hangs except when defaulting to external monitor.
Acer Ferrari AMD64 (using the 64 Dapper install).
ATI Mobility Radeon x700
On the last install, I could correct by adding the following to menu.lst
        Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT"
        Option "MetaModes" "680x480,1680x1050"
But that didn't work with Flight 5.

Could you please update the ati driver from the network?

I did release a new version with tons of bug fixes yesterday and it is not yet on CD.

I booted the ubuntu dapper installation with the rescue system from installation cd and updated the system via "apt-get upgrade & apt-get update".

In fact after that the system works fine. ;-)

i tried apt-get upgrade and apt-get update but it did not work for my Acer Ferrari 4005. Later tonight I will try a couple of edits to xorg.conf and see if I can get it to work.

despite my earlier message, I did not try a "couple of edits" on them. THey are clean.

Please do not refer to my xorg.conf and xorg.0.log attached above. Updates did not happen cleanly.
Re-tried updating today, and over 100 files needed updates. (!!**$$%) Something must have gone wrong.
However, when I did finish updating, re-booted, and screen was black. My problem was not solved.
So then I re-booted into external monitor, which works fine. Then I opened Synaptic, apt-got xorg-driver-fglx and related file, and re-booted into Safe Mode, unplugging the external monitor.
Then did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and changed the driver from ATI to FGLX.
Now it works fine.

I have the same problem with ATI Radeon 9600 and Flight 6 of 6.6. Install went fine, but on first boot the XServer did complete hang up my computer. No other console reachable. Only hardboot possible. XOrg configured the ati driver, which seems not to work. Also apt-get update/upgrade in recovery mode did not resolve the problem.
I was able to use the VESA driver and was then able to install the fglrx-package, which also works fine for me. But the X-Crashing with ati-driver could be a big problem for many people.
If needed, I can attach log and conf-file...

I experienced a similar situation where X and Gnome just freeze upon login(no blank screen; the screen just froze). I couldn"t access a console, mouse or anything for that matter. Only a hard re-boot (pressing the power button) would release the system.I have been experiencing this problem since i tried to upgrade (sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) to Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper beta2. I have dont have any such problem on my Ubuntu 5.10 installation. I have a ATI (ATI Radeon 9600)graphics card. (Toshiba SA60 laptop). I have had to downgrade back to Ubuntu 5.10. Could this be the same problem? Or would this be a different issue?

Try attaching an external monitor. If that works,
edit xorg.conf to add two lines near the end:

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT"
Option "MetaModes" "680x480,1680x1050"

(or whatever size your screen is)
Works for me.

I experienced a similar problem too with my fujitsu m1450G. The live CD freezes when gnome starts. I had to boot with the safe graphic mode.

I have no problem with breezy too.

When looking dmesg : it uses the xforcevesa to boot ?

I doubt in upgrading my breezy to dapper with synaptic as I don't expect to be able to reboot after upgrade.:-)
