no sound when playing music cd's or mp3

this is what I'm running new to lunix spending to much time trying to find a solution but no luck i put in a music cd in it plays but no sound also running ubuntu ultimate edition 2.0 (built upon ubuntu 8.1. My head is spinning help asap please?
