15.6" WIDE LCD Monitor problem in Ubuntu 8.10

Bug Description
We are facing one issue in ubuntu 8.10 with 15.6 wide screen LCD Monitor.
After the OS installation, in login screen unable to view the username and password. The font size is very high by default. Inside the OS also some icons are very big. Please refer the attached snapshots.
Hardware Configuration,
Motherboard Make: Gigabyte
Motherboard Model: GA-G31M-S2L
Monitor Make NO: AOC
Monitor Model NO: HCMDLWBT21
This Monitor is working fine with other Motherboards. Problem is coming only with this motherboard.
The same problem is existing in ubuntu 7.10 and ubuntu 8.04 OS also.

Hi Torsten,
This issue was solved, during the OS installation by selecting safe graphics mode.
Now there is no issue. But inside the OS i am unable to enable Desktop effects.
the error message shows unable to enable desktop effect.
