Bug Description

I have installed many computers, mostly oldies, with Ubuntu - sofar 100% success.
Lately I was trying to install a pc with FX5200 of Nvidia.

I installed the 3 avilable drivers, and also degraded from 8.10 to 8.04 - and the result is the same: the resolution without Nvidia driver is 800x600, with Nvidia driver 640x480, and never above these resolutions.
The same was with 8.10 or 8.04

The same PC was working well before with Windows XP.

I saw in the forums that other suffered as well from the same - I suspect it's a bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this. Just did a install of 9.04 RC and with version 173 (the recommended one) of the nvidia drivers i get a max of 640x480 resolution. Version 96 gives me the max resolution possible but i experience screen flashes and no compiz possible. 2D drivers only work like a charm. Also i get funny messages in dmesg:

This bug happened to me on Jaunty only. On Hardy, I could get a higher resolution using displayconfig-gtk and choosing the right monitor from the list. I have an AOC Spectrum 7VlrA, which I could find on the list.

But on Jaunty things got much worse because displayconfig-gtk isn't available. I tried several times to get a resolution higher than 800x600. The most weird thing is that the highest resolution available with the nvidia drivers installed was below that: only 640x480.

Nvidia-settings as root doesn't show better options and nvidia-xconfig tool isn't successful on recognizing the hardware and can't write a good xorg.conf.

The only workaround I could do after so many tries was running a Hardy live-cd session and installing the nvidia drivers. After that I copied the xorg.conf and the ~/.nvidia-settings-rc on a USB drive and used on my jaunty install. This way I can get resolutions higher than 800x600.
