Amaya 11 fails to install

when I try to run the Ubuntu specific installer from http://www.w3.org/Amaya/User/BinDist.html, the application fails to install.
I've begun a thread with the Amaya list and here's some content that one of the moderators gave me:

I'm not an Ubuntu maintainer (I'm the Debian maintainer of Amaya, though),
but please don't report bugs to the distribution when packages from
another source don't install...

Well, the problem is that he tried to install the package from the w3.org
site, which is different from the one on the Ubuntu repository. The later
is split between arch-dependent and independent data, so in order to
install it you would have to remove amay-data and amaya-doc first.

I don't really know what it means, I've only been using Ubuntu for about a week, but I really like it. I've authored a couple of books on web design software for MS Press (Expression Web) and would like a valid design tool on this Ubuntu machine. I won't quit till I get it installed!
