Bug Description

Banshee 1.4.2 in hardy 8.04.2 x64 cannot play MP3 at all. I also have XMMS and it plays all MP3s OK. Banshe and Rhythmbox and Totem refuse to play MP3s. Why??? I have installed 64 codecs, restricted extras - what else do I need?? Also, Banshe does not recognize my iPod nano - does not appear in banshee at all. Why?? Please help ASAP. See attached screenshot of Banshee display - orange square with "x" inside appears in front of each MP3 song - why???

Thank you for the report, but this is not a launchpad bug, re-assigning to Ubuntu.
We're interested in why you accidentally recorded this bug as occurring in launchpad instead of Ubuntu. If you can explain what happened, please let us know in bug 88818.

Hi, have you installed all of the gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, bad and ugly packages? XMMS does not use these to play MP3s, though Banshee, Rhythmbox and Totem, as well as other GStreamer based applications all do. I'm marking this as invalid because many others are able to play MP3s with the codecs installed. You just don't have the required codecs installed, that's all.

You do not have to make assumptions. I have installed all codecs. Banshee and the other two players DO NOT play MP3 or in fact any other format. Please fix, do not pretend it is invalid.

I'm not pretending it's invalid. It IS invalid. If the other two players
don't play MP3s either, then it's NOT Banshee's bug.

Also, take a look at the page here; there are some relevant steps that will help narrow down the problem: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems.

I had similar problems in bug 382244. I manually installed the codecs. This may sound strange but the first time I restarted banshee it didn't work; when I restarted it again it could play these files.

Can you please update to the latest version of Banshee to see if this problem still occurs, if you can confirm it does not occur then we can close this bug. If it does occur further investigation may be required.

Thanks for reporting this bug and for helping make Ubuntu better.

You can of course update to the latest version of Banshee by updating your Ubuntu installation.

To have banshee recognize your iPod, you need to install the podsleuth package from Synaptic.

Also, you should install the latest Banshee from this repository:
https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/ppa

Also make sure that you have installed the correct gstreamer plugins for mp3 playback.
