"W" (watch thread) does not function

Bug Description

Apparently the "W" key should "watch thread" in Mozilla Thunderbird. However, this functionality seems to be disabled in the version in Ubuntu.

The menu item "View->Threads->Watched Threads With Unread" needs to be similarly disabled, or the functionality to watch a thread returned.

Apologies if this is a duplicate bug, I reported another via reportbug as I couldn't initially find mozilla-thunderbird via launchpad.ubuntu.com

I think, maybe, that this should be two bug reports:
One, a feature request to watch threads in e-mails.
Two, a bug report for giving the option to sort e-mail by watched threads, but
not giving the option to watch e-mail threads.

As it happens, that bug is for the suite and this bug is for Thunderbird - and
this is purely a front end bug.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Just to check, you do realise that this menu item doesn't actually do anything for email, only news?

There is a debian bug for it appearing when it shouldn't iirc.

Thanks for getting back to me.

As I mention in the initial report, either the menu option to select
showing "watched threads only" should be greyed when looking at non-nntp
folders (does the nntp server record watched threads for you? never
really looked into nntp protocol), or the functionality should be
extended in some way such that this can work for mailing lists too.

Actually ideally I'd like a thread scoring system (#38988). And a pony.

Sam.

The upstream bug has been open 18months upstream.

Also of possible interest, is the same bug in seamonkey - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=179033 open 3.5 years.

The mozilla menu reference suggests that there should be a 'Watch thread' entry in the Message menu, which is missing in the Ubuntu version (Gutsy also). See: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/menu#messagewatchthread

Right, it seems they remove the Message->Watch thread menu item when looking at non-NNTP folders and not updated their documentation to explain this.

They have not removed the "View->Threads->Watched Threads with unread" menu item under the same set of circumstances.

Disturbing to see such a feature missing in Thunderbird - is no one using this application for mailing lists? ;) Anyway, is there a known workaround to "emulate" this feature while this one's still open?

It is possible to "emulate" this feature for filtering by manually editing the actual filter file (e.g., msgFilterRules.dat).

msgFilterRules.dat - How? Is that documented anywhere, or are there even examples out there?

The main issue, which is that we had a menu item with a corresponding keyboard shortcut that didn't do anything in mail mode (as opposed to news mode). The menu entry has been removed resolving the original bug.

There is still a comparatively minor issue of the superfluous "View->Threads->Watched Threads with unread" menu entry. However, it's not technically wrong - you just get zero results in this mode as expected. If you feel it's an issue, please file a bug upstream - we would follow them in this case.
