Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

Hi,
it's really strange,
but with a default isntallation of ubuntu,
I can't send files via pidgin.

Sending and reciveing normlyy end after choosing a dir.

Strangely some files sended via ICQ will work if sended by another person to me.

I know it'# similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/185202

but the link has been converted to a question which has never been answered.

Someone here who's got the same failures or does sending files via XMPP, ICQ and MSN work fine for you?

(same problem on 3 other machines here !)

I can confirm this, too. I only use Jabber and it does not work here. I am sure I have forwarded the necessary ports and even tried with the proxy. No possibility. Would be great if someone could look into this.
Thanks.

Tested with Jaunty updated version.

For me it even is more strange now:

ICQ: reciving of a 600kb file works fine sending NOT
MSN: sending and reciving works fine (used 600kb jpeg image (kubuntu leaflet))

Test Case: Open pidgin - send so else a file via MSN ICQ and XMPP (Gtalk)

Lastest Package Tested: see previous post

ISO Tested: Intel I386 8.10 (normal + update)
                   Intel I 386 9.04 Alpha 2 (last update 25.01.09)

Workaround: NO at this point

Next Step: Hope someone with pidgin knowloedge will help me
Maybe additional CD images would prove he problem?

CET(22:00:29) datallah: Gtalk doesn't provide a file transfer proxy, so unless you either manually provide a file tranfer proxy server (or are directly connected to the internet), it wont work.

I asked some friend @ school today,
audium (MacOS) which is based on libpurple to (as far as I know)
doesn't have this problem, so it mustn't be something with NAT just something with pidgin !

Yes, sending files is at least as important as chatting for most children :$ :D

:-) Nice to hear that you're having the same opinion :-)

PS: Sending folders is easy if you can send files, simply make a ZIP archive (or even better tar.gz)

benste: Well what about people sending you folders (if you didn't know the native ICQ client does indeed support this)

I'll have to check that later - I didn't know that the official client can do it :-)
I never used it.

I started using IMs on my Ubuntu Machine and never used any client expected Skype in Windows

Does not work for me!

I have here 2 machines, Oneiric and Natty, both with pidgin, and i am NOT able to send files via ICQ - reproducible!

- start on both machines pidgin
- go online (my wife and i)
- chat a little
- try to drag and drop an pic into pidgin (doesn't work)
- go in pidgin to 'Conversation' - 'send file'
- at the picture
- window with the file transmission opens
- my wife accepts... but nothing happens!

Pidgin 2.7.11 and 2.10.0

Please reopen the bug and analyse it again.
