Bug Description

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Opening a new browser window in epiphany takes ca. 12 seconds. Even if it is a blank page. I can see epiphany taking 100% of CPU during this time. New tabs open instantly.

I'm using Intrepid Ibex with latest updates.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/epiphany-gecko

ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games
 LANG=C
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: epiphany-browser
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-11-generic i686

thank you for your bug report, is the issue specific to this software? do you get it all the time? do you have it since you installed ubuntu?

The issue is specific to epiphany and I get it all the time. E.g. galeon or firefox or evolution open new windows instantly.
This is a recent issue, occurring long after first upgrading to Intrepid.

do you know what you updated before getting the issue? did you change any configuration? could you try using a different user?

I'm not sure what has changed before the issue occurred. Using a fresh user account epiphany works fine though. Maybe it's some of the extensions I'm using?

I tried disabling each extension, but to no avail. I then tried lauching epiphany from the command line with the -p switch and in that session new windows appear instantly. What does the -p switch actually do?

This bug is most likely due to the fact that I don't use the Gnome desktop, but Enlightenment. Maybe I should start some additional Gnome process? Here is a list of processes I have running after startup:

/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon -d --login
enlightenment
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/enlightenment_start
//bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 6 --print-address 9 --session
gnome-settings-daemon
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --log-target=syslog
/usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/matti/.gvfs
/usr/lib/pulseaudio/pulse/gconf-helper
gnome-screensaver
gnome-power-manager
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-hal-volume-monitor
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash --spawner :1.4 /org/gtk/gvfs/exec_spaw/0
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-burn --spawner :1.4 /org/gtk/gvfs/exec_spaw/1
/usr/lib/enlightenment/enlightenment_fm

I actually tried now to run epiphany under Enlightenment using a fresh user account and epiphany works fine there. Even without gnome-session-daemon etc. (Before I tried it as a different user in a Gnome session.)

I worked around the problem like this: I renamed the directory ~/.gnome2/epiphany, then started a fresh epiphany that had no slowness. I then imported my bookmarks from the old epiphany directory and everything seems to work fine for now.

This should at least be fixed in Ubuntu 10.04. Thanks for reporting.
