Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release: 9.04

gnome-panel:
  Installed: 1:2.25.5.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.25.5.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.25.5.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expected: When trying to move the location of the panel to another edge of the screen, the "grab" hand is not shown.

The expected reaction is to have the panel moved to other edges of the screen using a drag and drop method. The main problem, I am not able to move the panel to a second monitor.

I have this problem too.

@Kent, have a look at bug #192009 for specifying which monitor. I wrote a patch today implementing it, going to submit upstream soon.

That would fix the ultimate issue I am having. I think it would be nice to have the option to drag/drop these panels though. The way I set my system up is with multiple displays and two panels each covering the top of the display. That way I have two separate window lists, one for each monitor.

Nevertheless, thank you for working on this patch.

thank you for your bug report, read the changelog though that's not a bug, it was too easy to move the bar and that confused some users who didn't know how they did the change, now you have to use an extra key to move those

I thought that's what the "Allow panel to be moved/Lock the placement of the panel" options were for. I can't find the changelog but I was able to figure out the key qualifier. It feels like the feature is a little more hidden. There's no information about the key qualifier in the "Help" (file:///usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/user-guide.xml#gospanel-12). Personally, I'd consider this lack of information to still be a bug.

where do you have a such option? what ubuntu version do you use?

Richard Eames (naddiseo) wrote :

There was such an option in the right click context menu of a panel in previous ubuntu versions, or maybe it was during Intrepid's development cycle; I don't remember. Either way, the option is available in the source, I remember seeing it yesterday while writing the aforementioned patch.

The option was in a previous version of Ubuntu. I know this option is there in 8.10 as that is what I use on my laptop.

the option was a distribution change, upstream decide to go an another way and to require a modifier to be pressed which is what the jaunty version is doing now, right the user documentation could be updated, that's not a gnome-panel bug though

Where/ what is the modifier necessary to move the complete panel? I was able to build one on the bottom to replace the top one, but that was a pain! (not technically savy in Linux)

@Daffey, hold right alt down then drag the panel.

It seems I haven't woken up yet: I meant left alt.
