Bug Description

Randomly, the system stops responding to keyboard and mouse input. Both the mouse and the touchpad still move the pointer, but clicking does nothing. As regards the keyboard, it doesn't input anything on applications, nor hotkeys work. The system itself is responsive (for example, the network applet signal meter moves, the time applet changes as time passes, etc). Changing to terminals doesn't work either, but Sysrq does. I can restart the system through pressing the power button and waiting for the 60 seconds on the window that appears, or by using sysrq (Alt+Impr Pant+REISUB)

I'm using an updated Ubuntu Jaunty, on an acer Aspire 6930 laptop. The touchpad is a synaptics one, and the mouse is a Microsoft Confort Optical Mouse 3000.

(By the way, I didn't report using ubuntu-bug -p xorg as suggested, as it throws an error - I think I should fill in a bug report for that too)

This sort of sounds like what happens if hal is not running. Can you check and see if hal is running next time this error occurs? (You'll probably need to ssh into the box to do this.)

It has been some time without experiencing this. I will report if it happens again.

This specific problem hasn't occured anymore, but I now have problems shutting down - after killing every process etc, it gets stuck with a blinking white line and I have to shut it down manually. But I guess this doesn't matter in this bug report :)

I have the same problem described on this bug.

Randomly, the system stops responding to keyboard and mouse events. I only can work with current active window (example: console, web browser, etc), but without using mouse (clic doesn't work) or using menu with keyboard (Alt+F for file does not work). I can, for example, run programs from a terminal if it was the active program at the freeze time, or browse in a webpage (only with arrows, enter and tab key).

I'm having the same problem having just installed Jaunty on a Dell Latitude D420. It's happened twice today having installed Jaunty last night.

Attached is the output of lshal after this.

I am also experiencing this issue almost 75% of the time. System boots fine and works for a short period, then the problem as described above appears and the only way out is a reboot.

Similar issue on my Dell Latitude E6400 every few days. Usually if I keep tapping the right mouse button (the right mouse button under the touchpad not the one above) things start working again but the touchpad then moves the mouse really slowly and when looking under system | preferences | mouse, the touchpad settings no longer show.

Next time it occurs I'll grab some logs etc.

same problem, PS/2 keyboard and mouse stop working suddenly, mouse pointer moves, if I move the cursor over something, it looks like it starts flickering very fast as if it cycles through the rest of onscreen buttons, power button for me does not work and only way to recover is through hard resetting the system, no other system to ssh in

I have the same problem using Karmic. I don't notice it when I am actively using the system. However, when the system is idle, it freezes at the login page. I can move the mouse and SSH into the unit from a different machine, however the system does not seem to accept mouse clicks or keyboard input. Will upload my logs the next time this occurs.

Emilio, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder, but the one at the top) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
