Bug Description

downloaded cdrom image ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso and booted from it, choose install

(i) very minor flaw: after completion of the first part the CDROM tray opens and immediately closes again.
The screen says "Please remove the disc, close the tray (if any) and press ENTER to continue",
but the tray is locked and opening it is impossible.

(ii) major bug: the system reboots, I get a peculiar blood-stained(?) background, all is functioning well,
but there is no network. Not surprising, at no point was any question asked about network configuration.
But a computer without a network is useless. The installation was a failure.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

1. Is the problem with a hard wired or a wireless network adapter
2. Do you see the NetworkManager Applet in your system try?
Thanks!

Hello,
Did you try to connect via wired or wireless?
can you attach the output of cat /etc/network-interfaces and ifconfig to this bug report please.
Are you using a dhcp server or did you install when connected to a network that does have a dhcp server.

Thankyou.

I happened to encounter the above discussion a moment ago.
The report is really rather complete. I installed the given version of Ubuntu, and during the installation no network questions were asked. Since it is impossible to contact the network without any information, necessarily the installation was going to fail. Joseph Walton-Rivers asked whether wireless was involved. No, this was plain ethernet. The other questions are really inappropriate - since during the install no network questions were asked, Ubuntu could only use heuristics to guess something about IP addresses, netmasks, name servers and the like. Apparently the guesses were wrong in my case.
Of course I fixed the problems, forget how, it is long ago, maybe by installing something else, maybe by hand-editing for example /etc/network/interfaces.
