Bug Description

OS: Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit
Machine: Dell XPS M1330

1. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD into my CD/DVD+-RW drive, data CD/DVD, music, or blank, the drive whirs it around several times, but Ubuntu does not report any media having been inserted. 'pmount /dev/scd0' yields: 'mount: no medium found'.
2. USB storage drives (flash drives, portable hard drives) only work on one of my 2 USB ports. Both ports are functional, since they work with other non-storage hardware (keyboard, mouse).
3. The built-in webcam only works for 15 minutes or so after a fresh boot. After this, cheese fails to initialize it and gives me the "test" output instead.

I'm reporting these together since I started experiencing them at around the same time.

Looking at other bug reports, this appears to be a Linux bug. See bug # 109211.

I've experienced this bug as well. I've connected three different DVD reader/writers, two Sonys and a Targa to an IBM ThinkPad X60s and a Sony Viao via USB. None of these worked - they behaved as described above.

However, I connected an HP DVD1040 Lightscribe to the IBM X60s which has worked flawlessly. So there's a hardware dependency. Some USB DVD drives work, some don't.

Sorry, both the X60s and the Vaio are running Ubuntu 8.04, all updates applied.

On the X60s, uname -a
Linux zinchaiku 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 27 18:44:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

It might be worth splitting this into a separate report for the webcam?

One thing that might be worth checking for the stuff that only works on some ports might
be to try a powered USB hub, I can imagine that might be a problem for some hard drives
that are USB powered (if they are) - but it shouldn't be for the flash drives.

Hi Filip,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 318905

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
