Xdvi hangs X and everything else

I cannot use Emacs to write TeX. I compile the file, then from Emacs I launch Xdvi. Without closing windows I switch to Emacs, change something, recompile, switch windows to look at Xdvi. After one or two of these switchings, everything hangs. It begins with a small hourglass appearing in Xdvi, everything slows down enormously, then nothing more. The systems does not respond to any keyboard or mouse event (no X kill or console switch).

The thing is more wide and mysterious.
It hangs even if I use Emacs on a remote box on an ssh terminal (that is, Emacs in text mode) and I use instruct xdvi on the remote box to use my X display, even after telling Xdvi not to show images but only bounding boxes.
Both using the Openchrome X driver and the framebuffer device.
