Linksys WMP54G bit-rate degrades over time

I have installed a wireless WMP54G v4.1 adapter. Serial number is MDI40H719803

The following is what happens and is repeatable :

If I boot up my wireless is fast, i.e. around 3-4Mbps. This is tested on my internal network. Some time goes by and then my speed degrades to 400-700Kbps. It always does this after about 1-2 hours of being connected. To fix it I reconnect using iwconfig with the following exact commands :

iwconfig wlan0 essid "FitchResearch"
iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M

after which I again get the fast speeds. Again, after 1-2 hours the speeds degrade to 400-700Kbps. This happens every single time. I have switched between wireless channels with no change in behavior.

I have two other computers connected the the wireless network, a Mac and an XP machine, and neither of them every have any degradation.

My version is 8.04.1

Is this symptom reproducible using wired ethernet to your local gateway (AP/router) or another NIC?

It does not happen with my wired (on motherboard) ethernet. It is specific to the WMP54G.

Have been suffering form the same problem myself for about a year. I am on 8.10 (previous installation was an upgrade from 8.04, now have a fresh install with the same result). Connection is at full speed when booted into Windows. It only seems to take minutes for me to go from 10+Mbps to 1Mbps, and then it stays there. Signal is strong, reporting between 70 and 90%.

I am completely willing to help however I can by providing data and testing patches etc. For the love of broadband, someone please fix this driver that has been broken for YEARS.
