Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

My system is a Lenovo T61 (for details see attached sysinfo.txt), I'm using [K|X]ubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2 packages from "http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu intrepid main". Using XFCE the desktop size gets automatically adjusted to the VGA monitor's resolution (1280x1024@60Hz) after logging in.

What I expected to happen:
Display gets automatically adjusted to 1280x1024@60Hz as it is done in XFCE.

What happened instead:
When I log in to KDE, the resolution stays at 1400x1050@60Hz, and when I try to change to 1280x1024@60Hz with xrandr or krandrtray (enabling the VGA port and disabling the laptop's LVDS display, see xrandr.txt for details) kwin crashes and my desktop is white, no task bar, no desktop widgets, no icons.

I don't know if this is a duplicate of bug #291445 as I don't have a nvidia card...

Update:

kwin does not crash when using this xrandr command:
$ xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024 --output LVDS --mode 1280x1024

Just in case this could be related to an intel driver issue, here's the package info:

Please install kdebase-workspace-dbg and get new output form the crash manager. The one you attached is missing debug symbols, which makes it not very useful :(

Yes, much better. With the info I was able to find the bug at bugs.kde.org.
Luckily there was a big fixing spree for the screen-handling library, and this issue should be fixed in KDE 4.2.0. (KDE 4.2 final)
Marking fix committed until the fix can be released.
