Bug Description

This is on Intrepid(+proposed) with compiz.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start gnome-terminal (seems to work with any application)
2) Click *into* it (not the titlebar or the borders)
3) Press the "Shut down the computer" button on your panel (or select it from some menu)
4) See the "Shut Down the Computer"-window spawn behind gnome-terminal (but in front of any other window) and blink in the taskbar
5) Once you raise it to the front, it stays on top no matter what

Problem:
It should spawn in front of any window from the beginning.

Thank you for your bug report. That doesn't sound like a panel bug - the window that appears is part of gnome-session. I can't recreate this either, so it might be something specific to your window manager settings. Could you please run "gconftool-2 -R /apps/compiz > compiz.gconf" and attach the resulting file "compiz.gconf" to this bug report so I can have a look at your Compiz settings.

This also happens for the "Log Out of the session" window btw.

If you can't easily spot the problematic setting it's probably not worth investigation further and i will reset compiz to default... (delete the compiz tree in gconf-editor?)

Just kicked the /apps/comiz and /apps/compizconfig tree on a text console (while not logged in in X).

Surprisingly, this didn't help (it did reset all the compiz settings).

I can't spot anything amiss. Does it happen without Compiz running at all?

Without compiz it doesn't happen. The window spawns in the foreground, though it sometimes doesn't get the focus.

Blowing aways /apps/metacity , /apps/compiz , /apps/compizconfig at the same time seems to have solved it. (compiz must be reading some metacity settings?)

Now that it's "solved" for me i and no one else seems to be affected i think we can close this.

Yes! I created a completely new user to test.

I can't get the calendar to pop up in background (and have never seen this). But the issue looks really similar.

Recently (I think about the same time I began noticing bug 364838) the "Exit" options window on this system) began opening BEHIND the active window, and other windows on the desktop no longer dim out as they had previously. I can click it on the task panel and bring the Exit window to the front, but this is new, different and seems clearly wrong.

Exception: Exit window opens in front of an active Wine application window, but behind any other Linux window I tried (Nautilus, Firefox, Thunderbird and Mousepad.)

It sure looks like something changed for the worse on this system recently. (8.04 AMD64, updates current as of 2009/04/20 20:00 GMT. Running plain Gnome GUI / desktop. For more system data see attachments to bug report 354838.)

This is still an issue in Karmic, as of today. It's definitely low priority, as I haven't researched it for over a year, but it is annoying. Unfortunately, it's not something that I can reproduce reliably. That's why it's so low priority ... because it only happens between 50 and 75 percent of the time.

Further note: have only noticed it when I push the power button on my laptop. That is, the window usually pops up in response to me pushing the power button. When it doesn't, I have to hunt for it's flashing taskbar icon so that I can shut down or suspend my computer.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
