Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Why is GDM still version 2.20, even though 2.22, and 2.24 and soon-to-be-2.26-version 2.25 is already out the door?

Please update!

thank you for your bug report, the update doesn't bring anything useful to users, doesn't migrate configurations and gives less flexibility and choices that's why it didn't get update to ubuntu yet, the current plan is to get the new version is universe in jaunty and consider the upgrade next cycle if those issues are sorted

You could say the update from GNOME Terminal 2.24 to 2.26 doesn't bring in anything useful to users (I didn't notice any change, except for having window size presets in the menu), but which version is shipped in Jaunty? 2.26.

Also, GDM 2.26 isn't shipped in Universe, as you said it would be. Too late for Jaunty, though. Hopefully some kind soul will put up a PPA for it instead.

that is not correct, e.g. it brings the feature, that the language is automatically selected!

What language? It might have some advantage but it also has many thing lacking which the current version has

The language of the keyboard layout.
E. g. if I am using dvorak layout and another user is using us layout, both have to input name and passwd in the layout of gdm (or they adjust it everytime).
The new gdm sets the preferred layout, when clicking on the facebrowser-icon. So one can input his passwd with his specific keyboard layout.

Updating gdm to latest stable release (2.26.1) would fix lots of Ubuntu bugs, including bug #14571, bug #264553 and others.

There are important improvements and new features in latest stable gdm version, for example ability to change keyboard layout (this is very important for lots of countries, where multiple keyboard layouts are used, for example Lithuania or Latvia).

See http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gdm/tree/NEWS for list of improvements and bugfixes.

the advantages are known the question is to know if they outweight the inconvenients, there is no configuration tool for example, you couldn't activate timed login for example
