Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-generic

With ubuntu kernel 2.6.27-9, LACP does not work with a Cisco Switch (ws-3750g-ts) and a broadcom + intel pro/1000 mt nic bonded together.

Stopping networking (/etc/init.d/networking stop), compiling the new driver, insmod'ing it, and restarting networking fixes the issue.

The driver I used was 3.92n released 24th of Dec, 2008, downloaded from http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_desktop.php

I compiled the tgz and installed it.

Can we get this driver updated for the next kernel/release?

Rob

Hm, after reboot it is not working again.

I will do more testing to see what is happening. The broadcom nic is the active port and the intel nic sends out lacp info & receives nothing from the switch. Switch shoes the port as "suspended"

After further testing, I have the following working:

bonding of 2 intel pro/1000 MT nics (e1000) driver.
bonding of 2 broadcom netextrem2 nics (bnx2) driver.

bonding of 1 intel pro/1 broadcom netextreme (desktop) (tg3) driver. is broken. it seems that open trying this combination, the intel nic ends up sending lacp requests, and the broadcom becomes the active nic. The intel nic is show in the "suspended" state on the cisco switch.

As far as I understand the bonding module sits above the driver layer so you should be able to bond 2 different nics. Is this an error in the bonding module or is tg3 or e1000 doing something weird? I have no idea, but will provide any info needed to figure this out.

dpkg -S shows bonding and bnx2 bothing being in linux-image-<kernelversion> package. hence, my choice of the package as "linux"

Hi Robstarusa,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 317152

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have access to the box this happened on. Installing lucid hosed my box (black screen at startup).

I'm sorry I can't debug further until I have a working version of Lucid and then I can let you know if the issue still exists.
