This was intended to be fixed, unfortunately the new synaptics driver caused worse issues with other people, such as horridly slow mouse speed, and the mouse running off randomly in the wrong direction.

Perhaps this may be fixed for dapper?

It would be nice if those that had problems with 0.14.3 could try new 0.14.4 version :) Those that were very happy with 0.14.3 are now very sad :)

I'll test 0.14.4 on my laptop (changelog includes some fixes for 64bit archs) wich is 32bit and on wich 0.14.3 worked great.

0.14.4 looks quite ok to me, some things might be changed though:

- I use
  "MinSpeed" "0.09"
 "MaxSpeed" "0.18"
 "AccelFactor" "0.0015"
which makes the touchpad more responsive, the default
values are a bit slow.

- Would be even better to install gsynaptics or similar
by default on laptops with synaptics touchpad detected
and have a gui possibility for notebook users by default
(no xorg.conf fiddling)
Then it would be necessary to make a distinction between the two mouse control tools in the menu - one for internal
and one for external - maybe even include everything into the gnome tool that detects if there is a touchpad....

- Horizontal scrolling is disabled by default, though it would be nice to be there, if more programs would use it as horizontal scrolling, especially firefox which now binds forward and backward buttons which in my opinion is quite unusable.

Is it correct that the old package xorg-driver-synaptics has been replaced by xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in dapper ? Maybe this bug should be transferred to that package then.

The scroll drag is still broken.

Since I upgraded from Breezy to Dapper my Synaptics Touchpad
started to behave wrongly (it's much more slower and taps
don't work anymore).

I reported that (bug 32058) and now that I found this other bug
report I'm wondering if mine should be marked as a duplicate:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/32058

On the other hand, I'd like to try 0.14.4 version of the driver
but I don't know how to do it. Anybody can tell me?

I've solved my touchpad issues by using all the options from
the README.alps, as described on the Synaptics FAQ. But I'm
sure that this will bring a lot of problems to other people
that don't know how to set their xorg.conf options.

What can be done to have this resolved by default when
upgrading to Dapper?

In my laptop, which has a 4-directional button instead of a scroll wheel or scroll buttons, the following happens:

push-up to scroll up: Nothing seems to happen
push-down (to scroll down): The right-click menu pops up
push-left (to scroll left): Whatever text I had erased last is pasted at the cursor position
push-right(to scroll right): Nothing seems to happen.

It is a BAD bug, and is making my laptop very uncomfortable to use.

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop, with a Synaptics touchpad.

I'm running: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.14.3+seriouslythistime-0ubuntu3.

It works except for:
1. Horizontal Scrolling which does not work at all.

2. and neither these funny multibutton methods presented at ksynaptics:
Tapping -> Fingers -> Tapping, I can't get at other button to be emulated (though it might be just me missing clues here).

Went through /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/trouble-shooting.txt.gz already. everything seems normal.
