Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Have included details per "Please include, if possible" as follows :

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu.
ubuntu 8.10 desktop i386 installed from the Live iso cd image (its excellent)

the installation is minimal - details hopefully in the bug report collected info - will add details if required but not sure exactly what you will want so briefly listing these -
* 1.6 ghz pentium cpu, nvidia video card, generic dvd/cd combo
* installed on a 40 gb hard drive partitioned to dual boot with whingedoze XP partitioned as follows -
-- 5gb windows on sda1
-- sda5 to sda15 partitioned in chunks max 5gb but smaller for /boot and /tmp and /swap
boot selection via grub

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.
totem:
  Installed: 2.24.2-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
     2.24.3-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid-updates/main Packages
 *** 2.24.2-0ubuntu4 0
        500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen
Expected the movies to play.
used normal DVDs -
a) No Quarter - Jimmy page and robert plant - Unledded
b) TopGear - The challenges
c) The Brittas Empire - complete series 2

4) What happened instead
No quarter gave a message saying it couldnt play the disc after totem had automatically initiated a download of some package updates for codecs etc.
message box was shown with messages "an error occurred" and "Could not read from resource."

Top Gear and Brittas Empire both just hung and didnt respond so I ended up force closing totem.

I noted there is a later candidate version available so as soon as I can I will try that and update the bug report.
Meanwhile, please let me know whether the details provided enable you to diagnose the cause.

ran apport to collect info about the fail when playing dvd "No Quarter" which gives the message "an error occurred, Could not read from resource."
tried to lodge it by subscribing but dont know if the extra attachments were added because the bug report system gave me the message "you are already subscribed to this bug" (of course, because I lodged it and was just trying to provide extra info).
It might be a single bug, or 2 different problems for the different dvds.

I eagerly await your advice and help.

actions taken so far -

per info in answer to question 49761 -
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+question/49761

searched for the following packages -
libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2

libdvdread3 and libdvdnav4 were already installed and were up to date.
Could not find libdvdcss2 but it showed three packages for restricted-extras -
kubuntu-restricted-extras
xubuntu-restricted-extras
ubuntu-restricted-extras

I searched for and found packages for
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
(the search for libdvdcss2 found the packages listed above)

since the description for ubuntu-restricted-extras seemed to cover the things listed for the other 2, I installed "ubuntu-restricted-extras" and its several dependencies.

tried again to see whether the restricted extras solved the problem but got same result for "No Quarter" dvd

have now upgraded the totem package version 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
the disc was still in the player so I started totem from Applications->Sound&Video and then selected play disc from the movie menu.

same result. error message "Could not read from resource."

please advise.

same result for "No Quarter" - error message "Could not read from resource."

same result for "TopGear" - totem just sits there with the rotating system busy mouse pointer icon and I end up giving up after a couple of minutes of no result.

I searched for totem bug reports and found a couple that might be related -
Bug #219062 reported by bmdavis on 2008-04-18 (low)
"Could not read from resource" error when playing encrypted DVD
looks like the one that I get when I try playing the "No Quarter" dvd

Bug #280780 reported by Murray Cumming on 2008-10-09 (medium)
Totem hangs when asked to play DVD
is similar to what happens when I try playing dvds TopGear and Brittas Empire series 2.
but the symptoms are slightly different - the disc name is unaffected on the play movie option under the movie menu - it shows the dvdname ok all the time in the menu option, it just doesnt play the movie, just as for bug 280780

Can this bug report #317057 be linked to both #280780 and #219062 rather than just closing it as a duplicate of only one of those ?

I will add the following comment to both the related bugs -
See also bug report #317057 which relates to both bugs #280780 and #219062

I reread some of the info in bug #280780 and realised that libdvdcss2 is not packaged as a separate package, which is implied from some of the comments and instructions.

I ran the script libdvdcss2 from package libdvdread3 and it fixed the problem for the TopGear dvd
It now plays OK.

That suggests that bug #280780 is actually a packaging problem.

The remainder of this bug is a duplicate of #219062

If necessary this bug report can be closed as a duplicate of #219062
