Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When booting this laptop in its port replicator (Dell D/Port), video works fine. However, once gdm starts, the external video goes blank and stays that way. I can switch VTs and it works there, but X does not. Startup and shutdown splash screens also work fine.

A couple of times I got the gdm login screen to appear on the external video; however, when I logged in the screen went black. I also tried the 'failsafe terminal' session once. Typing 'xrandr' in the terminal caused the screen to go black.

This is on Jaunty, kernel 2.6.28-4-generic.

After a little more work, it appears that when xrandr is run for the first time, it sets the external display to resolution 1360×768, which the connected monitor does not support. Thus the screen goes blank.

Hmm, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be retested on latest Jaunty to make sure the issue still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/. If you can reproduce it in the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from this testing.

This seems to be working in recent Jaunty
