Bug Description

I followed the various instructions I could find but when I run compiz it just crashes. It just dies without doing or saying anything and I end up with no window manager, switcher, or anything other then windows with no borders that I cannot move. I can just restart metacity and killall the gnome bits to get working again but no neat effects.

I am on an amd64 machine (Xeon really) with an NVIDIA Corporation NV37GL [Quadro FX 330] card with TwinView and all the rest using the binary nvidia-glx driver.

When using Xgl TwinView stops working and I just get a spanned desktop across the two heads. No biggie as this was expected. I also tried turning off all the TwinView stuff which made no difference.

Since compiz just keeps crashing no matter what I try or how many times I run it, I straced' it.

Hopefully this strace output might help diagnose the issue.

Thanks for the report.

Could you attach your copies of the following, please?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg*.log
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf

There are probably some more that I've missed. Also, which instructions have you followed? Could you post the URL(s)?

xorg logs.

I am not sure if these will be helpful or not. I have restarted X a few times since disabling Xgl/compiz. Please let me know if I should redo do everything to get a proper log (if these are not useful).

This is probably caused by bugs #31579 and #32411 - The former of which has already been fixed upstream.

This ticket should really be assigned to Matthew Garrett (mjg59).

At any rate... thanks for this tip Chris. I will try out the new version when I get a chance.

Have you tried compiz from Edgy? Are you still having the same problem with that version?

Thank you for your bug report. As generic compiz as now been uploaded to Feisty (compiz-quinn is now known as beryl), we need to see if your bug is still present. If you can test the version of compiz in feisty (1:0.3.3-0ubuntu2~git2006112 or later) and tell us if you bug still exists, please do. Please make certain you are using Ubuntu's Xorg as well. We also require the make of your video card, to help debug driver issues. If you are using a newer ATI card (x1000 series or newer), please indicate so. To get this information, please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I'm using the nvidia-driver 1.0-9629 with Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" and every time I start compiz (1:0.3.3-0ubuntu2~git2006112) I get a segfault. I do not have the wobbly plugin enabled.

I have an Nvidia 7800 GS.

i also had seg faults using compiz on edgy amd64. so i just installed 0.3.3 as suggested from the feisty repo updating libc and libdbus stuff as well. now the seg faults are gone but still (i somehow remember i had this before) compiz is missing the window decoration...

using a nvidia 6600GT with driver version 1.0-9629

Exactt, are you still using the Edgy version of xorg? Are you able to try stock Feisty, including Feistys xorg?

Ernst, I assume you are using a completely stock Feisty system?

I tried disabling one X-screen (I have two) and then compiz starts working. Filed a new bug about it: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/74012
