This might be a duplicate of bug 269539. However, we'd need to see your main.log, apt.log, and term.log files. Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUpdateManager for information on how to get these files and attach them to this bug report. Thanks.

This was not a distribution or release upgrade. It was just an upgrade within 8.10. So there is nothing in /var/log/dist-upgrade/

I will attach /var/log/apt/term.4.gz, a logrolled version of term that covers this period. Unfortunately, it ended abruptly, and is incomplete. This was not caused by a full volume. It does not look very interesting but perhaps the missing part would have been interesting. Look for the part of the log started 2009-01-12.

I will attach /var/log/dpkg.log.4.gz. Also logrolled and also not very interesting.
