Bug Description

After installing dapper on an HP nw8240 with an Ati Mobility FireGL v5000 graphics chip, X did not work with the ati driver. Booting to gdm would leave a blank screen, and switching to the terminal showed a sceen that wrapped vertically with about 1 inch of the top of the screen showing at the bottom of the screen. There was also a solid bar about the width of the gnome-terminal tab bar which was an almost solid light grey at the top of the wrapped portion of the display at the bottom. There was a lot of visual static, with the text blurred. I was able to boot in single user mode, bring up networking, and install Ati's binary fglrx driver, and that corrected the problem.

It looks similar, but in my case (same notebook, Kubuntu) I just get blank screen. The fact is that at least for me, Breezy installed properly (with "ati") and Dapper also up to Flight 2 (in my case Flight 3 broke it first).
I would suspect this is X.org 7.x specific, as AFAIR final X.org swith to 7.x was done after Flight 2.

Sounds like it could be the same problem.

The MonitorLayout LVDS option fixed this for me. But the Screen Resolution app reports a refresh rate of "-13551 Hz"! I checked xvidtune, and I'm guessing it's wrong too, as it says "Vertical Sync (Hz): 603.59". It's at a resolution of 1920x1200, which is what I usually use with the fglrx driver, but it's not listed in my xorg.conf with the ati driver (1680x1050 is the default in xorg.conf). The only resolution listed in Screen Resolution is 1920x1200.

and the machine froze upon logging out of X. didn't look like a kernel OOPS since the numlock/capslock keys weren't flashing, but I had to power cycle it.

I also get (almost 100%) hang of machine on logout - see bug 32092 (probably fglrx related)

I only have problems with the OSS ati driver. The fglrx (8.22.5 built manually) works very well for me.

Do you get logout hang with fglrx or OSS ati driver? I use fglrs (as it the only that works) and have only issue with hang on logout (same as you mentioned in comment on 2006-02-22 22:56:44 CET)

Only the 'ati' driver hangs on logout for me. And using the 'ati' driver I only get a display with the LVDS option. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with Ati's binary 'fglrx' driver.

This seems to be duplicate of bug 29357. I will mark it us such, as all hints how to workaround are listed there.
