Even a version update to 0.3.13 would be much appreciated.

Thanks Gourgi,
I already know about that PPA but it appears Packagekit-Gnome is broken within that PPA.

Can anyone shed some light as to whether or not Packagekit will be default in Jaunty?

PackageKit 0.3.13 is the lates API-stable version of PackageKit. Do we really need the API/ABI stable versions in Jaunty? PackageKit 0.4.4 has much better APT support than 0.3.13, it can do dist-upgrades and is really fast. More information: http://packagekit.org/pk-download.html
@Slug71: KPackageKit is standard in Kubuntu, but it already has broken dependencies. I hope a working PackageKit will be standard in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

Hi Matthias, yes i'm already aware about KPackagekit being in default in Kubuntu.

I'm guessing we'll only see it go to Ubuntu also once those problematic dependencies are resolved and since its Feature Freeze today i think it would be safe to say that we will have to wait until 9.10 unfortunately.

Oh well, just one more thing to look forward to with 9.10 i guess.

This would be really bad. Is it possible to get the newer PackageKit in Jaunty? (API/ABI stability is not important at time, I think. The user wants a working package manager)
Is the package maintainer notified? I don't know what was planned at UDS for PackageKit, maybe there exists a plan to get the 0.3.xx working on Jaunty as good as on Fedora.

Indeed. It was always my plan to ship the 0.3.x series in Jaunty. I backported a small api addition to support kpackagekit 0.4.

Furthermore it is very misleading to judge about software quality only taking the version number into account. If you are missing a feature or important bug fix please request a backport or patch.

The statement about the better apt support in the 0.4.x branch is wrong. Actually I have just started working on it some days ago. (I am the author of the apt backend).

I am going to publish updated 0.4.x packages in a separate PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~packagekit/+archive/0.4.x

How are things looking for Packagekit being default in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic?

Argh!! I cannot believe Packagekit has been given the boot again!!
It would make a lot more sense integrating AppCenter with Packagekit giving Ubuntu/Kubuntu that uniqueness of Packagekit yet Packagekit can continue to grow with the input of a growing number of Distros!

0.4.8 is out now.

I used 0.4.6 in Foresight and it is much improved over the 0.3.x series.

Have you tried reporting a new bug for Karmic to discuss the upgrade?
(I think it should be done too)
Are you sure that PackageKit won't be default in Ubuntu 9.10? It works perfectly on my system and I have not heard that it won't be implemented. (I also don't know if it was planned)

No i havent filed a new bug but perhaps i will.

Yes i am sure about Packagekit not being default. Packagekit has been dropped from Ubuntu all together in favour of AppCenter.
There is a thread in the Karmic Testing and Discussion section of the Ubuntu Forum.

But yes it was finally suppose to be default for Karmic but then again as was it suppose to be for Intrepid and Jaunty.

It is really starting to shape up pretty good now though and would have been a good time to bring it in.

I guess the next LTS which will be here in under a year will have a half assed AppCenter in it. Good choice for an LTS.

And it has a roadmap stretching all the way to April 2011 already. Imagine how much Packagekit will have changed in that time.

I have submitted a bug report, Bug #389935, requesting that Ubuntu Karmic(Gnome) be released in 2 versions. One with AppCenter installed as default and the other with Packagekit installed by default.

I feel its only fair to those that have voted in Brainstorm and those that have supported it in the Forums and here in Launchpad and realize the importance of this to Linux.

Go add to the new Bug guys.

I think this Bug should be closed: KUbuntu Jaunty won't ship a newer PackageKit version and KUbuntu Karmic already uses the latest Version of PackageKit.
