Bug Description

I am running Kubuntu 8.10 on a Sony Vaio with a nvidia geforce go 6200.
Any time after loading the drivers that I try to use a TTY (or when shutting down) there is a blank screen.

The TTY is still there, and responsive, but I cannot see it.

I had it with driver version 177 and figured I'd wait until 180 was out before filing a bug report.
180 does not correct this and I had this same problem in 8.04 as well.

(I do not have this problem in fedora with a geforce FX 5700, so I don't think it's nvidia drivers OR having an old nvidia card)

Have you tried disabling framebuffer for the console?

This solved the problem for me:

I edited /etc/modprobe.d/options

I added this line: NVreg_UseVBios=0
I then rebooted.

This was the ONLY thing that made any difference.

Can you still reproduce this on the latest nvidia driver (185)? If so, you might want to look for support on the nvidia forums: <http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s&forumid=14>.

Please note that the Ubuntu developers have no control over the nvidia driver, as mentioned in the "Hardware Drivers" control applet.
